N21bn not for Jonathan’s campaign only, says Gana

(NIGERIA) The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday denied insinuations that N21 billion raised by it was to fund the President Goodluck Jonathan campaigns.

The party said substantial part of the fund will be used to complete the 12-storey building of the party secretariat in Abuja.

Chairman of the PDP Fund Raiser Committee, Professor Jerry Gana, who revealed this yesterday in Abuja, said “there is a specific focus on the incomplete PDP permanent headquarters.”

Gana explained, contrary to insinuations making the round that fund raised is targeted at funding Jonathan’s campaign, “we have PDP governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives’ candidates that will also campaign.”

The chairman of the fundraiser, who spoke at the party’s permanent site, stressed that, “By the grace of God this building will be completed this year.

“The money was not raised specifically for a particular candidate of the party. There are also other candidates for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and other elective offices.

“The president, in his capacity, has the right to quietly raise fund for his campaigns from his friends across the globe.”

Gana maintained that the party’s National Working Committee and National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, have resolved that the secretariat should be completed for habitation soon.

On election, he said Nigerians will decide who their leader will be, noting that the political class should eschew violence.

He emphasized that the nation will not break up, arguing that Nigerians are mature people.

He added that PDP will campaign in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa as well as the other troubled areas in the North East.

Also, Chairman of publicity of the fund raiser committee and Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Ochekpe, stated that for PDP to be strong, it has to build the capacity.

“Parts of the fund will be used for capacity building, funding our offices in 36 states, offices in 774 local government areas, wards and units level.

“For us to continue to enjoy democracy, we must strengthen capacity and governance, the fund will be judiciously used,” she said.

The PDP national headquarters would gulp over N16 billion to complete it. But the party requires N10.5 billion to complete as an initial payment of N6 billion has been made to the contractor handling the project.
