Insecurity: Will INEC postpone the 2015 poll

One phenomenon that has continued to shake the fabric of Nigeria no doubt is the spate of insecurity.

The question then remains whether on the basis of the increasing state of insecurity, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would consider a shift in date as earlier suggested by Pastor Tunde Bakare, Convener of Save Nigeria Group (SNG) and former running mate to presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari.

But probably as a way of adding voice to the earlier position of the  SNG convener, Adamawa State Governor, Bala Ngilari once against called on INEC to postpone the conduct of the February elections in the state until April due to insecurity.

He was speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop on Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and 2015 general elections organised by INEC, wherein he explained that as the chief security officer of the state, it would be unfair for him to suggest that the security situation in the state had sufficiently stabilised to conduct elections on February 14, 2015.

The governor said, "Some of the local government councils in the state were still under siege. Presently, the state has over 29,000 IDPs in 15 designated camps."

Ngilari further posited that the situation could have been said to have stabilised if not for the recent attack on Gombi Local Government, adding that, "About the same time, there was an attack on Girei Local Government in the southern senatorial district which has never happened before now.

"Experience has shown that the insurgents will go back and regroup and we cannot predict where and when they will attack. We can only hope and pray that normalcy returns soon but we cannot say that all is well."
