It can be comfortably argued, that the reduction announced yesterday, in pump price by the President Goodluck Jonathan led Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) is a political gimmick geared towards luring people to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forth coming 2015 elections.
This is because the reduction came at a time when there is high level campaign to outweigh each other between the major contenders of the poll, ruling PDP and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) as the 2015 elections get closer.
But one thing politicians in this country have failed to realise, is that Nigerians can no longer be deceived by cheap gesture of this nature.
However, the FG stated that the reduction in crude oil prices in the international markets and reduction in the pump price in other countries, was responsible for its action.
Specifically, the FG through its Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, cut off N10 from the pump price of petrol from N97 to N87 per litre, with an addition that the decision takes immediate effect.
It would be recalled that in December, Finace Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, maintained that the country would not effect any reduction in the price of fuel despite falling oil prices at the international market, until the revenue crisis occasioned by the dwindling oil rates is over.
