If Nigerian politicians are to listen to wise counsel, the advice posed by former military ruler, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, should not be pushed aside.
In the words of the retired military officer, he sees it that Nigerians must rise up as a whole and make it clear to politicians in the country, that Nigeria is bigger than their personal ego and ambitions, with an addition that, otherwise checked, the inordinate ambition as well as desperation of some of the country's politicians is capable of terminally checkmating the nation.
It was also the contention of Abubakar that, "Nigeria is once again at a crossroads and not sure of which way to go. The nation is today being threatened by an intractable insurgency, unprecedented carnage, a rise in the menace of riots, communal violence, cattle rustling and sundry criminality in several states.
"To make matters worse, our political class daily display immaturity in their conduct and utterances to further heat up the polity.
"It is time we told one another uncomfortable home truths."
With me, I think the argument of Abubakar is well founded. What I see today are politicians who are actually interested in their individual pockets.
What happens to the existence of Nigeria is not their business so long as they get power at whatever it would cost.
