Jonathan shelves campaign committee’s inauguration

BY THE PUNCH
(NIGERIA) President Goodluck Jonathan again on Monday put on hold the inauguration of his presidential campaign organisation.
The inauguration of the organisation which has a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ahmadu Ali, as its Director-General had earlier been postponed without any official reason.
The latest postponement was however attributed to the death of the President’s younger sister, Mrs. Nancy Jonathan-Olei.
Jonathan-Olei died in the early hours of Sunday at a hospital in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State during a brief illness.
Most dignitaries and party chiefs billed to grace the inauguration scheduled for the Legacy House, Maitama, Abuja were already seated before the latest postponement was announced.
Guests were awaiting the arrival of the President for the event to kick off when his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Prof. Rufai Alkali, announced the postponement.
Alkali apologised to those present, saying the postponement was inevitable.
He said, “As you are all aware, His Excellency (the President) lost his sister, Mrs. Nancy Jonathan-Olei, yesterday (Sunday) in the morning.
“In view of this, he has decided to suspend this inauguration for today until tomorrow at 11am.

“Mr. President has asked me to convey his apologies for the inconveniences this postponement has caused, and to tell you it was due to circumstances beyond our control.”

He thereafter asked for a one-minute silence in honour of the deceased.
