ELECTIONS: VOTERS MUST BE PROTECTED, SAYS NAVY

Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy, today maintained that criminals should stay off riverine communities during the forthcoming general elections.

Besides, it equally gave assurance to Nigerians residing in the creeks of the Niger-Delta region of safety of lives as well as the electoral materials to be used during the exercise.

Eastern Naval Command Chief Staff Officer, Rear Admiral Atiku Abdulkadir, who stated this shortly after the show of force exercise which took officers and ratings of the command to Parrot Island, a distance of seven kilometres from the Nigeria Navy Ship Victory Jetty in Calabar.

The Naval Chief also issued a warning to pirates and miscreants who may want to cause trouble to desist from such act, with a further position that the Navy is determined to ensure protection of citizens including lives and property of Nigerians in the region and beyond.

According to him, "This is a warning to pirates and miscreants who may want to foment trouble.

"They should desist from such act as we are poised and ever ready to protect lives and property of Nigerians in the region and beyond.

"What we are doing now is a routine activity that is sometimes not available to the public.

"We want to reassure the people in the Niger-Delta region that we are constantly present. Out at sea, the people may not be aware of what we are doing; this is a way to show to the public that patrols like this is part of our constitutional responsibility.
