The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), in the South-South zone today warned the Nigerian Senate not to think of arm-twisting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, to use the Temporary Voter Cards (TVC) in the rescheduled general elections.
National Vice-Chairman of the opposition party in the zone, Hilliard Eta, posited that the invitation on Jega by the upper legislative chambers to explain the use of the card reader machine was an attempt to arm twist the commission to resort to the old order of the TVC.
Eta equally argued that it was a plot by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to impose the use of TVC for the rescheduled polls.
According to a statement by Eta's Special Adviser on media, Bassey Ita, the APC deputy national chairman sees the move to introduce the use of
TVC as an attempt to drag Nigeria back to the stone age where development was time-consuming and difficult because of the use of analogue devices.
Eta also suggested that the resolve of the Senate to move against the card reader citing section 52 of the Electoral Act was another ploy to discredit the INEC and force it to go back to the use of the TVC.
Eta also added that should that be the case, the PDP would have dragged Nigeria centuries back.
According to the statement, "I was scandalised that the PDP-led senate would cite section 52 to justify their agitation against the use of the Permanent Voters Cards for an election they had initially conceded to participating in.
"I was scandalised that even those who are masters of reason and logic could be bereft of logic and reason in defending Nigeria’s descend to analogue and backwardness.
"This agrees with the saying that a man who is bereft of logic takes to violence. The latest antics is another ‘violent’ approach to the elections that the PDP has decided to take after foisting the postponement agenda on the nation. The world is watching."
