Oba Akiolu: Maids charged over alleged stealing of monarch's N30m

Oba Rilwan Akiolu

Consequent upon their alleged involvement in the stealing of N30 million belonging to the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, two maids Ikudehin Victor, (34) and Hunsa Philip (34) have been brought before a Lagos Chief Magistrate's Court sitting in Igbosere, to answer questions to the said charges.
They were arraigned before the court presided over by Magistrate (Mrs) Helen Omisore, on a four count-charge of conspiracy, stealing, neglect to prevent felony and failed to prevent commission of an offence.
The duo were arraigned by the police through its prosecutor, C. N. Odi who had informed the court that the alleged offences offends Sections 409, 285(7), and 408 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011. Part of the count reads: "That you Ikudehin Victor, and Hunsa Philip, between 2012 and March 2013, at Oba's palace, Idunganran, Lagos Island, in the Lagos magisterial district, did stole the sum of N30 million, property of HRM Rilwan B. O. Akiolu, male, and there by committed an offence punishable under Section 284 (7), of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011."
The prosecutor also informed the Chief Magistrate that the defendants had the knowledge that one Ajasa Basit, aged 15, was committing an offence, but failed to use all reasonable means to prevent the commission of the said offence.
But the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges which the prosecutor insisted contravenes and is also punishable under Section 408 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011, leading to the court admitting them to bail in the sum of N250, 000.00 with two sureties in the same like sum.
The Chief Magistrate also ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation to the accused who must tender before the court evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos state government; and have their house/office verified by the court's registrar.
Magistrate Omisore adjourned the matter till July 31, 2014 for mention.
