A 45 year-old man, Johnbosco Chocho Opara, has been arraigned before an Ebute Metta Chief Magistrate's Court, Lagos over alleged attempt to kidnap a Lagos based woman lawyer.
According to the police, the defendant alongside others now at large, were alleged to have on July 19, 2013, at 1, Aremu Adesegun Oniru, Victoria Island, conspired to kidnap the lawyer.
The police further explained that the suspect had called the lawyer through her MTN number 08033511686, and informed her that they had been paid to eliminate her, but for her not to be killed, she should pay the sum of N1 million.
It was further stated that the defendant and others said to be at large had on April 18, 2014, along Lekki-Epe expressway, attempted to kidnap the lawyer, and that he was arrested after the complainant lodged a complain with the police.
The accused was arraigned on four count charges of conspiracy, threat to life and attempted kidnap. According to the prosecutor, Corporal Cyraicus Osuji, the alleged offences are punishable under Sections 409, 229, 300 and 404 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
Part of the counts reads: "That you Johnbosco Chocho Opera and others now at large, on April 18, 2014, along Lekki-Epe expressway, did attempt to kidnap one Barrister Ngozi, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 404 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011."
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all the charges, prompting Magistrate (Mrs) Y. Badejo-Okusanya, to admit the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in the same like sum.
The court also ordered that one of the sureties must be a Grade Level 12 and above either in the service of Federal or Lagos State government.
