Aturu’s death: Nigeria’s light had gone out- SAGAY



The Agege, Lagos South-West Nigeria, residence of the late Lagos lawyer and rights activist, Bamidele Aturu was today thronged by lawyers, friends and other sympathisers in an apparent show of empathy, describing the late legal icon as an advocate of social justice.
Amongst eminent lawyers that signed the condolence register included constitutional lawyer and rights activist, Professor Itse Sagay who described the late Aturu as Nigeria’s light that had gone out.
Even, former Ogun State Attorney-General and Justice Commissioner, Mr. Wemimo Ogunde (SAN), described Aturu’s death as a big loss to the country, with an addition that, “Dele, this is a big loss your departure has brought. Till we meet in the bosom of the Lord, rest in peace."
For the Executive Chairman, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL), Debo Adeniran, "Dele, you were a fulfiling patriot; quinessential humanist; a new Gani Fawehinmi cut short. Your space will be difficult to fill in our minds. Rest well."
An official statement from Aturu's Chambers signed by the Deputy Head of Chambers, Mrs Chisa Anyanwu, states: "With a deep sense of loss, we announce the transition to glory of our Founder and Head of Chambers, Bamidele Aturu Esq. He died on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the LASUTH after a brief illness. His remains have been deposited at the morgue of LASUTH. He was 49 years old.
"Until his death, Bamidele Aturu was a leading Human Rights, labour and pro-democracy activist. He is survived by Mrs Bimpe Aturu and children. Burial plans will be announced by the family in due course after consultation with all stakeholders."
