ECOWAS CHAIRMAN CONGRATULATES NIGERIANS ON RELEASE OF POLL RESULTS

The Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government and President of Ghana, Mr. John Dramani Mahama says that ECOWAS has received with deep satisfaction, the declaration of the results of the March 28 Nigerian Presidential and Parliamentary elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

"On behalf of the Community, I wish to congratulate the Government and people of Nigeria on this great achievement,"

Mahama said in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the ECOWAS Commission.

He said that ECOWAS noted the peaceful and transparent conduct of the election, and congratulated General Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidential candidate of the APC, who emerged the winner from the results and commended the leadership and statesmanship demonstrated by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), by accepting the results and congratulating the winning candidate.

"ECOWAS also notes the high sense of duty and professionalism exhibited by the INEC led by Professor Attahiru Jega, which was a significant factor in the success of the elections.

"ECOWAS commends the people of Nigeria for the determination and courage demonstrated throughout the period of the elections.

"This is a clear indication of the collective commitment of the Nigerian stakeholders towards strengthening democracy and good governance in line with our Community Protocols," the statement said.

ECOWAS urged all political parties, candidates, their supporters and the general public to accept the verdict of the Electoral Commission, continue to observe the atmosphere of peace and employ exclusively legal and constitutional means to seek redress for any grievances.
