INEC redeploys commissioners in 36 states, FCT

(NIGERIA) As part of its preparations to conduct the 2015 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has redeployed its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The INEC bulletin 704 released yesterday in Abuja indicated that in a letter dated 24th day of December 2014 and signed by the Secretary to the Commission, Mrs. Augusta C. Ogakwu, the RECs were directed to conclude all handing and taking over formalities by Wednesday, 31st December, 2014.

The redeployment is as follows: Prof. O.E. Onukaogu (Enugu), Prof. Tukur Sa’ad (Bauchi), Ahmed Makama (Taraba), Mike Igini (Edo), Selina Omagha Oko (Abia), Edwin Offor Nwatarali (Anambra), Sadiq Abubakar Musa (Sokoto), Jibrin Ibrahim Zarewa (Kebbi), Hussaini Ahmed Mahuta (Kaduna), Abubakar Umar

Garba Wara (Zamfara), Emmanuel Onucheyo (Kwara), Rufus O. Akejum (Oyo), Abdullahi Umar Danyaya (Nasarawa), Timothy A. Ibitoye (Ogun), A.L. Ogunmola (Osun) Barito Lenusikpugi Kphagih (Bayelsa), Haliru A. Tambuwal (Jigawa) and Kassim Gana Geidam (Gombe).

Others are Ibrahim Bagobiri Marafa (Katsina), Aniedi Ikoiwak (Delta), Habu Zarma (Yobe), Akin Orebiyi (Lagos), Hussaini Halilu Pai (Kogi), Kwanga Godwin Mbatsavbee (Plateau), Sylvester Okey Ezeani (Cross River), Minkaila Abdullahi (Kano), Lawrence Azubuike (Ebonyi), Sam Olugbadebo Olumekun (Ekiti),

Also, the commission was explicit residential candidates seeking to withdraw from February 14, 2015 presidential contest and their replacement by political parties have up till today to do so. Just as National Assembly candidates who wants to withdraw from contesting the 2015 general elections, have today (Tuesday) as deadline to do so, even as parties desirous of replacing such withdrawn candidates must effect that today.

This is sequel to INEC timetable, which stipulates that last day of withdrawal by candidate(s) replacement of withdrawn candidate(s) by political parties for presidential and National Assembly is fixed for December 30, 2014.

INEC Director of Publicity and Voter Education, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi in a telephone conversation yesterday confirmed that “the deadline is normal working hours today (Tuesday), but I don’t know if there is request for extension,” he said.

Meanwhile, withdrawal and replacement of withdrawn governorship and State House of Assembly candidates by political parties, according to the same timetable, is slated for January 13th, 2015.

The commission said this is in line with Section 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010 (As Amended) which provides for not later than 45 days before the election.
