Abia frees 14 prisoners

(NIGERIA) Governor Theodore Orji of Abia state, today, granted state pardon to 14 prisoners in the state.

A statement signed by the Attorney-General of the State and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Umeh Kalu, said the gesture which was part of activities commemorating this year’s Christmas celebration, was in line with the governor’s prerogative of mercy.

The statement said the exercise was based on the recommendations of the state Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, adding that section 212 of the 1999 constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, confers such powers on the governor .

According to a statement the beneficiaries include : Uchechi Egwu, Kennedy Ikpeazu, Nnanna Kalu, Udoh Ufomba and Chibuzor Ezenwoko.

Others are: Ejike Kelechi, Okezie Nwokoma, Chiemela Nwagbara, Chinasa Onyenweaku and Isaac Macaulay.

The rest are: Ogburu Urum, Kingsley Onuigbo, Ndubushi Anyanwu , and Chima Uzoigwe.
