(NIGERIA) Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) of Lagos State, today swore in three new judges with an assurance that his government would not compromise on its promise on good welfare.
The governor consequently charged called on all judges in the state to remain incorruptible, fair and above board in the discharge of their duty.
Fashola equally charged all the judges to avail themselves with continuous learning in order to keep up with the emerging areas of legal practice on which they would need to adjudicate.
The governor also asked the judges to bear in mind the way they carryout their duty could either prosper or ground the economy.
The newly sworn in judges includes; Justices Adedayo Akintoye, Olabisi Ogungbesan and Obafemi Adamson. According to Fashola, "Our commitment to your welfare as a government remains undiminished. It shall be a matter of continued priority.
"As new judges today, you can be rest assured that you will never have to worry anymore about where you will sleep. This state judiciary can boast that all its judges now own their own homes.
"As for your official vehicles, I am sure that the Chief Judge (CJ) has made the arrangement, and you will get them today. As for your working enviroment, our programme on building new courtrooms and refurbishing the existing ones continues. In the first week of January, 2015 the new courtrooms will be finally handed over."
The governor equally gave an assurance of prompt payment of sundry allowances and entitlements.
The CJ, Justice Oluwafunmilayo Atilade, stresses that the need to to fill existing vacancies in the state judiciary consequent upon the huge population and economic potential of the state, gave rise to the appointment of the new judges.
Justice Atilade consequently charged the newly appointed judges to see their appointment as a call to service. The CJ also gave an advice that the new judges should be morally upright and shun all forms of corruption.
On his part, Attorney General of the state and Justice Commissioner, Ade Ipaye said the appointment of the new judges will further enhance the efficiency of the state judiciary.
Ipaye added that, "This meritorious event signals a much desired augmentation of personnel on the Lagos High Court bench, necessitated by the increasing quest of Lagos residents for justice and the need to moderate the workload of individual judges.
"It also affords us the opportunity to bring to the bench a wealth of experience, scholarship, selfless service and rigorous work ethics, which I am sure will further boost the image and efficiency of our judiciary."
Responding on behalf of the new judges, Justice Akintoye promised that they would allow themselves to be guided with the spirit of fairness, impartiality and equality in the discharge of their duties.
