There will be no crisis in 2015 – Oritsejafor

(NIGERIA) The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, on Wednesday said that the 2015 general election will be free and fair.

The CAN president said in a statement he issued in Abuja that Nigerians must learn to support their leaders in prayers and physical support in this New Year and above all things.

He said, “We must all exhibit love and sacrifice for ourselves and our nation in our collective quest of a better Nigeria beginning from 2015.

“Many have alluded to the fact that the 2015 general election would throw Nigeria into chaos but as a man of faith I see the election as Nigeria’s turning point.

“Leaders must be wise and courageous in their decisions in this coming year because as it has already been known the challenges are becoming multifaceted from insecurity to crashing oil prices and many others.

“But I see a lot of positives and opportunities in the midst of these challenges and that is what I want Nigerians to absorb in their hearts, the year 2015 may seem quite challenging for Nigeria, but it is one that equally holds a lot of hope and promise that could lead to the fulfillment that we have all yearned for.

“So I disagree with the wide spread projections about 2015 whether in terms of security, infrastructure, politics and the economy, man is not God, I believe that 2015 might just be that year in which Nigeria’s socio-economic revolution will be actualized.

“I reserve special accolade for gallant men and women in the battle ground, may their efforts to secure a one, united and peaceful nation never be in vain. For our youths, women, the aged and all Nigerians, I wish them well in this New Year and pray that Almighty God grant our individual and collective desires as we enter the New Year.

“Fellow Nigerians. It gives me great pleasure and joy to extend my warmest regards to you all. We have come to the end of another eventful year that truly tested our strengths and weaknesses, measures our faith in God and stretched our limits beyond what we all could have imagined.

“Despite the daunting challenges, we were able to weather the storm and have emerged even stronger and can be counted among people of strong character and unwavering faith.”

New Year: IGP orders tight security nationwide

(NIGERIA) The Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has directed zonal Inspectors General of Police and Commissioners in the various commands nationwide to ensure effective and efficient deployment of operational manpower during the New Year celebrations.

Abba has also directed the AIG in charge of border patrol to ensure that the nation’s borders are effectively manned to prevent cross-border crime. The AIG in charge of police air wing has also been directed to provide aerial patrol for the Federal Capital Territory and other states.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the directives were to ensure a secure and hitch-free celebration across the federation.

In view of the current security challenges, the IGP similarly urged worshippers both at Jummat and Church services to take adequate measures to reduce the number of vehicles around their worship places.

Operators of motor parks, shopping malls and recreational centres were also advised to work very closely with the police and other security agencies as they strive to strengthen general security in their various facilities.

“The Inspector-General of Police, on behalf of the entire officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, heartily felicitates with good people of Nigeria as we celebrate the New Year 2015.

“While saluting the courage and gallantry of officers and men of the Force for their tireless services in protecting lives and property during the year, the IGP charges police personnel to continue to be civil in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

“He, however, warns that officers found acting contrary to the Force’s vision and mission will be appropriately sanctioned.

“The Inspector-General of Police, while wishing all Nigerians a very blissful and peaceful New Year celebration, assures Nigerians of the Nigeria Police Force readiness and commitment towards ensuring a free and fair 2015 general elections,” the statement added.

Army explains delay in recapturing towns seized by Boko Haram

The Nigerian Army said on Wednesday that the need to reduce collateral damage had delayed the recapture of some towns and villages seized by insurgents in Borno.

Brig.-Gen. Olajide Laleye, the Director, Army Public Relations, gave the explanation while fielding questions at news conference in Abuja.
“We are not interested in collateral damage.

“The Nigeria Army is very careful about collateral damage, to that extent our operations are carefully planned to make sure that collateral damage is reduced to the barest minimum.

“If certain areas have not been recaptured it is because the Nigerian army is giving such areas very careful plans, the plans are ongoing.
“At the right time you will see the outcome; we will not tell you, of course, before hand, of what we intend to do; but you will see the outcome,’’ Laleye said.

According to him, Nigerians will be pleased at the end of such operations that collateral damage is reduced to the barest minimum.
He assured that law abiding Nigerians in those areas would be rescued from the insurgents, while those towns and villages completely freed from terrorism and insurgency.

Earlier, he said Gombi, Hong, Uba, Makera, Holma and Vimtim, all in Adamawa, had been recaptured, adding that the current military offensive would be sustained until the enemy was “completely defeated’’.
Laleye said new strategies had been introduced in the ongoing war after formations and units involved were evaluated, adding that this had impacted positively on the counter-insurgency operations in the North East.

He said that all officers and men involved in the operations in the region would undergo counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency training before being deployed in theatre of operation.
The army spokesman explained that this followed the directive of the Chief of Army Staff that all Divisional Headquarters should set up schools to step up counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency and Special Operations training.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to restate its determination to bring this counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations to a speedy and decisive end.
“Equally, the Nigerian Army seizes this opportunity to reassure Nigerians of its preparedness to support relevant agencies in the successful conduct of the 2015 general elections,’’ he said.

On the ongoing Court Martial of some officers, Laleye explained that it was necessary to enforce discipline in the armed forces and achieve success in the war against insurgency.
He said success achieved so far would not have been possible if the army do not undertake steps to remain a formidable fighting force through time tested procedures and enforcement of regulations.

“The judicial process that led to the convictions and acquittals (of some officers) followed international best practices in the military law and also conforms to relevant Nigerian laws.

“Let me state categorically that a General Court Martial has the status of the High Court and is back by extant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The General Court Martial is not a final authority. Its processes are not only subject to confirmation by the appropriate superior authority but also subject to appeal,’’ he said.

Reduce number of vehicles at worship centres -Police

(NIGERIA) Due to the security challenges in the country and the general preparation for the New Year Celebrations, the Nigeria Police High Command has urged worshippers at Jummat and Church services to reduce the number of vehicles around  their worship centres.

The Force equally advised operators of motor parks, shopping malls and recreation centres to work very closely with the police and other security agencies as they strive to strengthen security in their respective facilities.

The Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, who wished Nigerians a great 2015, said he had directed all Zonal AIGs and State Command Commissioners of Police to ensure an efficient deployment of all operational manpower and tools at the disposal of their respective Commands.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, on Wednesday in Abuja, said Abba has further directed the AIG Border Patrol to ensure that the nation’s borders are effectively manned to prevent any cross-border crime.

The AIG Air Wing has also been directed to provide aerial patrol at the Federal Capital Territory and other States.

The statement reads, “The Inspector-General of Police, while wishing all Nigerians a very blissful and peaceful New Year celebration, assures Nigerians of the Nigeria Police Force readiness and commitment towards ensuring a free and fair 2015 general elections.

“While saluting the courage and gallantry of officers and men of the Force for their tireless services in protecting lives and property during the year, the IG charges Police personnel to continue to be civil in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities. He, however, warns that officers found acting contrary to the Force’s vision and mission will be appropriately sanctioned.”

Buhari decries hardship, corruption in New Year message

(NIGERIA) The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday alleged that the Federal Government had declared “a regime of austerity on Nigerians in 2015.” He warned the Federal Government against wishing Nigerians a happy New Year, saying it had become clear that “its actions are calculated to undermine the happiness of Nigerians.” Buhari, while congratulating Nigerians on the New Year, expressed hope that the alleged plans would not work out if elected in 2015.

In a New Year message by the Director of Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr. Dele Alake on Wednesday, Buhari said hardship, corruption and insecurity in the country were unacceptable. He said the country desperately needed a disciplined and visionary leadership that genuinely has the capacity to fight corruption. According to him, “It is only some Nigerians who have access to the corridors of power and benefit from the monumental graft that characterises governance in the country today that can enjoy their perverse and ultimately futile form of happiness.” The APC presidential candidate, however, expressed hope that the glory and pride of Nigeria would be restored if elected in 2015. He said, “Great Nigerians, the announcement made by the Presidency and its agencies in the last one month has put many Nigerians in sadness. Electricity shall cost more. The devaluation of the naira means the price of goods and services shall rise. Essential goods are being removed from the reach of the poor. Indeed, the Presidency has declared a regime of austerity that will be executed in 2015. To quote the press reports, the President himself has declared that Year 2015 shall be “tough” on our people.

“Against this season of despair foisted on our people, I bring to you, a New Year message of hope and optimism. I share the anxiety of the middle class and the poor who have borne the brunt of the policies of this government for so long with increasing burden. I share the fear of the unemployed whose hopes for new jobs in the new year is being dashed because companies will cut jobs to escape inflationary spirals. I share the concerns of the manufacturers whose import-dominated production will be challenged by the austerity measures.” Buhari called on Nigerians to vote out the Peoples Democratic Party, promising that his administration would ensure “cheaper electricity, food security, accelerated power supply, integrated transport network, free education, affordable health care service and effective security of life and property.”

According to him, Nigerians cannot enjoy the dividends of democracy owing to corruption, impunity and indiscipline that currently incapacitate the country.

He added, “Nigerians must be the sole object and focus of government. Man must be the pivot around which governance revolves. The more the potentials of citizens are maximised within any nation, the higher will be the prospects of that nation for attaining greatness. The first great task facing Nigeria today, therefore, is to put in place a government that can guarantee the safety and security of Nigerians throughout the length and breadth of our country. This is because Nigerians must first of all be alive, safe and free from fear before they can exercise and utilise their talents for the benefit of their nation.

“I declare, that, collectively, we can bring an end to this season of despair; we can bring an end to this avoidable fear; we can bring an end to this needless anxiety. On February 14, 2014, the Almighty offers us a historic opportunity to chart a new course out of the tragedy that we have found ourselves; History offers us a chance to correct the errors of the past. Great Nigerian people! This is our chance!

FG using security agencies to oppress opposition parties -APC

(NIGERIA) The All Progressives Congress has raised the alarm over the plan by the Federal Government to use the security agencies, especially the DSS and the Police, to harass and intimidate the opposition with a view to decapitating it ahead of the 2015 elections.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the torrent of threats being issued recently by the Minister of Police Affairs and the DSS, over alleged inflammatory statements by opposition leaders, is nothing but a thinly-veiled attempt at cowing the opposition and destabilizing its ranks.

It said the strategy includes the invitation of key opposition figures for questioning by the DSS, starting with the APC National Publicity Secretary, to be followed by arrests and detention of such figures.
APC said the impending clampdown is the PDP-led Federal Government’s answer to the soaring profile of the opposition ahead of the polls, and called on local and international observers of the elections to keep a close eye on the unsavoury developments, which constitute a clear and present danger to the success of the elections.

”The Minister of Police Affairs said publicly that he has already directed the Inspector-General of Police as well as the DSS to arrest anyone who makes inflammatory statements ahead of the 2015 elections, and then went ahead to castigate the APC, thus exposing the real reason for his directive.

”If the Minister, and indeed the security agencies were carrying out their duties as an official/agents of state rather than partisans, they would have realized that no one is more guilty of making inflammatory and even treasonable statements than the supporters of the President and members of the PDP.

”Yet, not once has the Minister, and the security agencies under his control, called these people to order. There is no better indication of the mindset of these threats-issuing Minister and the security agencies under his control than their glaring double-standard and vexatious partisanship. This is not how to run the affairs of state,” the party said.
It recalled that a series of inflammatory, insulting and downright treasonable comments by supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan and officials of the PDP all went without as much as a whimper from those who are now howling at the opposition for statements that are neither inflammatory nor treasonable.

Ekiti factional lawmakers jerk up budget

(NIGERIA) The Peoples Democratic Party caucus of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed into law the 2015 budget in a closed-door session, after jerking it up by about N166 million.

Governor Ayodele Fayose had on December 15 presented a N80.774 billion 2015 budget titled, “Budget of Reality” to the Assembly amid tight security.

But the Assembly after chasing out journalists from covering the plenary presided over by the factional leader, Dele Olugbemi, on Wednesday increased the budget to N80.94 billion.

Olugbemi who briefed journalists after the closed-door session said the increase was for the Assembly to carry out renovation in the Assembly.

He added that the lawmakers ensured that all the three arms of government, Executive, Judiciary and the Legislature were well represented in the budget proposal.

Journalists and other members of the public were chased out after the leader of Government Business, Samuel Ajibola, raised an objection, describing the sitting as a special one that needed to be held in closed-door.

“We are not flouting the laws if we ask non-members to walk out,” Ajibola said.

At this point, the Sergeant-at-arms and other internal security of the Assembly ordered those affected, including journalists to take their leave.

Justifying the action, Olugbemi while addressing newsmen said the House can design the kind of sitting it desired, depending on the circumstance.

Olugbemi said the House of Assembly’s committee on Appropriation did a thorough job, saying this is the first time the budgetary estimate submitted at the Assembly would be increased since 2011.

“The appropriation bill has now become a law. We decided to increase the budget estimate to prove that we are independent.”

Meanwhile, the embattled Speaker, Dr. Adewale Omirin, and other 18 lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress have described the passage of the budget as illegal and an exercise in futility.

Omirin, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Wole Olujobi, described the sitting as “one in the series of comic tales by farcical politicians holding the reins of governance in Ekiti State.

He recalled that the seven PDP lawmakers had been suspended at a sitting two weeks ago in Ado-Ekiti where resolutions on the autonomy for the local governments among others were reached and sent to the National Assembly as Ekiti State contributions to the ongoing constitution amendment.

“It is sad‎ that Governor Ayodele Fayose has turned Ekiti State House of Assembly to a safari park where the macho posturing of misguided adults in G7 is being masterfully manipulated by this accomplished choreographer of political sophistry.

“In the sitting they themselves knew was illegal, they chased away print and electronic reporters that got wind of their plan to sit. They held the illegal meeting with no in-house correspondents in attendance as they were also chased out.”

Omirin insisted that APC members would continue to apply laws in whatever they do, stressing that what APC members swore to protect at inauguration is the sanctity of the Nigerian constitution.

“As far as the constitution of Nigeria is concerned, the ‘Assembly’ led by Olugbemi is an illegal body that has no place in law. APC lawmakers shall continue in the path of constitutionality for our errant and misguided colleagues to know that it is only through law, truth and honour that we can take Ekiti State to the heights that will be a pride to all our people,” Omirin said.

However, Olugbemi maintained that the sitting was legal, urging the APC lawmakers to face the reality.

Olugbemi, in a statement by his media aide, Mr Femi Iroko, said, “We sat in the hallowed chamber of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and received the bill from the duly elected governor of the state and worked on the bill in the constitutionally-designated venue for the sittings of an honourable house. Let Omirin tell the world where he and his co-travellers sat to take their wild decisions.

“Legislative matters are serious matters and not what a disgruntled set of people would go and sit in the parlour of a godfather and take decisions that can never be binding. Omirin and his group are free to call a family meeting for Aisegba-Ekiti and think they are not deluding themselves.”

Alleged N47.1b theft: Court throws out charge against Akingbola, others

(NIGERIA) Lagos division of the Court of Appeal sitting in Igbosere, today threw out the N47.1 billion theft charge, made against former Managing Director of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr Erastus Akingbola alongside his aide, Bayo Dada by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The appellants had queried the ruling of Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo of the High Court of Lagos State sitting in Ikeja which touches on jurisdiction.

The Court of Appeal in a unanimous judgment allowed Akingbola and Dada's notices of appeal and declared that the subject matter of the alleged offences touches on banking operations and operations of capital issues which fell under the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court.

According to the Appellate Court's lead judgment delivered by  Justice Amina Augie (presiding) and adopted by other members of the panel; Justice Samuel Oseji and Justice Abimbola Obaseki-Adejumo, the Lagos High Court presided over by Justice Lawal-Akapo  took a narrow view of the matter when he assumed jurisdiction on the matter.

Justice Augie also declared that the lower court fell into a serious error when it failed to abide by the decision of the appellate court on the case of Okey Nwosu vs. EFCC even when it was brought to its notice.

The Court of Appeal judge observed that the Appellate Court had in Okey Nwosu’s case declared that the Lagos High Court where the charges were initiated against the defendants, had no jurisdiction over capital market-related issues.

Justice Augie further maintained that the failure of the Lagos High Court to follow the principle of 'Stare decisis' is tantamount to judicial rascality and a call for anarchy, with an addition that it would
encourage the lower court to take-up arms against the appellate court.

The Appeal Court maintained that the subject matter of the alleged offences related to banking operations and capital market issues which is outside the purview of the Lagos High Court.

Justice Augie declared that the lower court failed in its duty as an unbiased umpire when it refused to study thoroughly the processes presented before it.

According to the Appellate Court, "The lower court turned a blind-eye to the prove of evidence brought before it before delivering its ruling. It is the duty of the court to do substantial justice, a one-sided justice is no justice at all."

It would be recalled that the former Intercontinental Bank MD and Dada had through their lawyers Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), and Professor Taiwo Osipitan (SAN), instituted two separate applications, challenging the jurisdiction of the lower court to entertain the 22-count charge made against them by the anti-graft agency.

Justice Lawal-Akapo had in his ruling delivered on May 2, 2014 dismissed their applications and held that the charges preferred against Akingbola and Dada were within its competence and purview to determine.

But not satisfied, Akingbola and Dada filed two separate appeals against the ruling and urged the appellate court to set it aside.

TB Josuha hosts relatives of building collapse victims

(NIGERIA) Prophet TB Joshua, Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), will host a New Year’s memorial service for the South African relatives of those killed in a building collapse at his Lagos megachurch.

A spokesman at Joshua’s SCOAN said 44 South Africans have flown to Lagos to attend the ceremony following the September disaster which killed 116 people, including 81 South Africans.

Joshua, a self-proclaimed prophet, “is going to lead the service to commiserate and offer spiritual support,” said SCOAN spokesman Patrick Iwelumor.

“As the chief mourner, there is a need for (Joshua) to connect with these people,” he added.

Joshua is one Nigeria’s most influential and wealthiest pastors whose followers include prominent politicians and business leaders from across Africa and around the world.

The Lagos state coroner is carrying out an inquest into the causes of the collapse at a guesthouse within the church’s compound.

Expert witnesses have said the structure was unsound and lacked proper permits, but Joshua’s vocal followers have insisted the building came down as a result of foul play and was a bid to destroy the powerful religious leader.

Among the theories advanced by Joshua loyalists is that a plane flying in the area at the time of the collapse dropped an explosive device on the building.

One weapons expert called by SCOAN lawyers, Beidomu Iguniwei, has testified that the collapse could have been caused by an “infrasonic weapon,” although there appears to be no credible evidence to support that claim.

Testimony at the inquest has dismissed sabotage as a cause, including evidence from aviation officials who said that the air force plane in question was on a routine training mission and had in fact landed before the building collapsed.

Joshua has refused to honour a series of summons demanding his appearance at the inquest. Some of his supporters have suggested it would be inappropriate for a so-called “Man of God” to be subjected to questioning.

Wednesday’s candle light ceremony will begin at sundown and last through midnight, Iwelumor said.

The victim’s relatives arrived in Nigeria on Christmas Day and Joshua is said to have paid for their travel.

When the trip was announced earlier this month, some South Africans took to social media to condemn Joshua’s move as a bribe aimed at discouraging relatives from filing a lawsuit over the deaths.

But SCOAN’s South Africa based spokesman, Kirsten Nematandani, has said the trip and New Year’s memorial service are about “the spirit of caring”.

Only poverty lover will vote Jonathan – Osinbajo

(NIGERIA) The running mate to the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, said the poor state of the nation’s economy has plunged many Nigerians into poverty.

He added that there must be a change of government at the federal level to liberate Nigerians from poverty.

The former Attorney General of Lagos State spoke at a town hall meeting with artisans, tradesmen and farmers, organised by the Lagos State Government in Ikeja.

He said only those who love poverty and would want to remain perpetually in hunger that would vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

Osinbajo said, “No one is ignorant of all that is happening in this country. No one likes hunger and poverty, but people are hungry. In 2015, only those who love to continue to be hungry that would prefer that the government in power at the centre remains there.

“By God’s grace, we will remove them from the seat of power. The people there presently cannot do anything because they don’t know what to do. They lack the capacity and capability to govern the country.”

In the same vein, the APC governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, said APC, from the period of Bola Tinubu to Governor Babatunde Fashola, had continuously provided good governance to the people of the state, adding that if voted into power, his government would not deviate from the principle.

Ambode said, “Our promise to you as a party is to provide good governance and able leadership. We want to take good care of your businesses so that you will have more to take care of yourself, your children and your home. There must be change of government at the Federal level. APC must take over in Abuja.”

Fashola noted that if Nigerians observed the situation of the country critically, they would find that the country was not better off than it was in 2011.

Fashola, who enjoined Nigerians to vote for APC at both the governorship and presidential elections, said, “The time to make a very important decision is here. Your request for continuity in Lagos is what I support. But for that project to continue, it would require you to vote for our party in 2015 election.

“Also, Muhammed Buhari and Osinbajo are our candidates for the presidential election, if you vote them into power in 2015, you will have successfully rescued this country from destruction.”

Jonathan not fighting corruption – Ex-ICPC chair

(NIGERIA) A former Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Justice Mustapha Akanbi and the Chairman, Anti-Corruption Commission, Nigerian Bar Association, Mallam Yusuf Ali (SAN) have said that the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration is not serious in the fight against corruption.

The two decried the increasing rate of corruption in the country, saying nothing tangible and substantial was being done to address the trend.

They spoke in interviews with journalists on the sidelines of the public lecture on “Corruption – the bane of our society,” organised by the Amicus International Club in Ilorin , the Kwara State captal, on Tuesday.

Akanbi, who is a former President of the Court of Appeal said corruption, kidnapping and other societal ills were on the increase in the country and that government institutions and the judiciary were not helping in curbing corruption.

Akanbi said, “Honestly, I do not see what is being done about corruption now. I ask myself these questions: Does it mean that all the governors are corruption-free? Does it mean all the legislators are corruption-free? Does it mean the judiciary is corruption free? We know that it is happening but people are not being arrested, no action is being taken and the end result is that people accept bribe with impunity now.

“At least, if they had taken few people to court, we would have known that something is being done. There is a general lull and the fight against corruption has gone down completely.

“Now, when you look at many people wanting to be governors, is it because they want to serve their people or that they want to go and chop? It is apparent that many of them want to enrich themselves because they know that when you go there you make money and become wealthy, ditto going to the legislature. Yet people are suffering; there is no development. Corruption, kidnapping and other ills of the society have gone on the ascendency.

“Honestly, in case of the governors, who have been arrested? We know about Oduahgate and the billions of naira that Sanusi alleged was missing. The terrible thing is that the judiciary is not helping.

“The indices are that the moments are dark, the clouds have thickened, corruption is escalating.”

Ali said that Jonathan’s administration was not fighting corruption at all and urged Nigerians to know that corruption makes all the citizens poorer in the short and long run.

He said, “I have said this long time ago, there is no drive against corruption by the current government and that is quite obvious because the President believes that there is no corruption in Nigeria. He believes that what is going on is petty stealing.

“So, if he doesn’t believe there is corruption, you can’t hold him for not driving any anti-corruption war. If somebody doesn’t believe there is a problem then he would not be obliged to look for solution.”

‘INEC can’t reject candidates’

(NIGERIA) The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday said that it would not reject any candidate nominated for the 2015 elections.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of INEC, Mr. Kayode Idowu, who stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja, said that the commission had no power to reject any candidate.

Idowu was fielding questions on petitions written to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against some candidates for the 2015 elections.

He was asked whether INEC would disqualify candidates on the basis of the petitions to the EFCC.

But Idowu said, “Based on Section 31(1) of the Electoral Act, INEC has no power to reject any candidate for any reason whatsoever. That is what the law says, and the law also provides that the political party will nominate candidates. If there are issues with the particulars of any candidate, INEC will refer back to the party. The party will have to do the needful.

“It is the same thing with the issue of the court case. For instance, if a party files a case against a candidate and the court says ‘you must not take that candidate,’ INEC will refer back to the party and inform its leaders to be guided by that order; so the party will have to do the needful because INEC has no power to reject candidates under the Electoral Law.”

A national newspaper had on Tuesday reported that the EFCC had received 250 petitions against candidates, who emerged at the governorship and National Assembly primaries of political parties.

Efforts to get the Head of Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, to comment on the commission’s position on the large number of petitions written to the commission against candidates were not successful.

The calls to his mobile telephone indicated that it was either switched off or in an area outside network coverage.

But it was learnt that the EFCC might not act on the petitions because its leadership was not convinced that the motive behind the petitions was to promote the fight against corruption.

Blame Obasanjo for Nigeria’s woes —Gani Adams

(NIGERIA) National Coordinator of Odu’a Peoples Congress, OPC, Otunba Gani Adams, Tuesday berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo for allegedly laying the foundation of Nigeria’s current problems.

He also expressed worries over the conduct of the 2015 general elections noting that utterances made by politicians could lead to crisis.

Otunba Adams, who said this while addressing newsmen said the concern was borne out of genuine fears that no matter who wins the presidential election between President Goodluck Jonathan and General Mohammadu Buhari of All Progressives Congress, APC, the nation was likely going to erupt in violence.

According to him, if Buhari loses next year’s election, crisis may erupt in the north, while the Niger Delta region is likely to be engulfed in crisis if President Jonathan loses.

Blaming the former president for major problems confronting the country, he said “the very cabal that Jonathan complained about was created by Obasanjo. All the problems that are existing in Nigeria today, the foundation was laid by Obasanjo.”
On the issue of a planned interim government, in case the 2015 poll became inconclusive, Adams said that could not be the solution.

Osun APC wants Obanikoro charged for contempt of court

(NIGERIA) Osun State   chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that, the statement credited to immediate past minister of defence(state) Musiliu Obanikoro that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) already has the upper hand at the Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo was contempt of court.

APC in a statement signed by its   Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy   Kunle Oyatomi , said Obanikoro statement is in contempt of court and demanded that he should be sanctioned, stressing that the statement was designed to misinform the public against evidence before the tribunal.

APC says   Obanikoro’s conclusion runs against the grain of evidence so far produced at the Tribunal.

It stated   that implicit in Obanikoro’s statement is the insidious impunity of the PDP to present a fait accompli in a case that is ongoing in the court.

“The idea is to give a false impression that the PDP has secured a favourable judgment in a case in which evidence is still being produced by witnesses, the PDP’s bluff is characteristic of that party’s arrogance of impunity inspired by its gross misuse of power that has become notorious.”

APC therefore stated that Obanikoro should be sanctioned by the Tribunal for contempt of court for unlawfully pre-empting the Tribunal’s decision on who actually won the August 9 governorship election in Osun State.

It would be recalled that the petitioners, in proving their case before the tribunal called 43 out of the over 500 witnesses they listed to testify in their favour.

Court stops INEC from naming Ondo PDP candidates

(NIGERIA) Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court, Abuja has restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) from publishing names of nominees of the Peoples Democratic Party for National and State Assembly elections in Ondo State.

In a ruling yesterday, the court gave the order after listening to contempt proceedings initiated against the electoral body by the Olu Ogunye-led executive and some aspirants to the House of Representatives.

The contempt proceedings against INEC and the national PDP, its national Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Mu’azu and the National Secretary, Prof. Wole Oladipo, emanated from an order of the court directing them to relate with the Ondo State PDP executive headed by Dr. Olu Ogunye in respect of the conduct of primaries and election.

Justice Mohammed held that “none of the parties should do anything that would render the subject matter of the suit a nugatory till Tuesday January 6, 2015.”

The court, however, declined to pronounce on the contempt in view of the fact that there are divergent interpretations on the order issued by Justice Ademola by both counsel.

Justice Mohammed said in view of the urgency of the matter and the time limit for submission of candidate list, there is need to preserve the subject matter of the suit.

However, instead of complying with the said order of Justice Adeniyi Ademola, the alleged contemptors received two lists of nominees from the PDP national body and the plaintiffs.

Moving the application for contempt on behalf of the plaintiffs, Prince Ajibola Oluyede insisted that INEC violated the order of the court made on December 18, 2014.

But INEC lawyer, Ibrahim Bawa, argued that the Commission was not in contempt of any order of court as there was no express order stopping INEC from receiving nomination list from the PDP national body.

In addition, he posited that the electoral body acted in accordance with the provisions of section 31 of the Electoral Act 2010.

“We are only guided by the position of the law that we should receive nomination list of candidates from the national headquarters of political parties”, he said.

Oil price dips below $57, lowest in 15 years

The price of Brent crude fell to a 5-1/2-year low of less than $57 a barrel yesterday, depressed by a global supply glut which outweighed concerns of lost supply from Libya where battling militias have closed ports.

According to Reuters, the oil benchmark recovered ground later but was on track for its second weakest month since the global financial crisis of 2008, and traders said the sell-off that has halved crude prices in six months showed no sign of coming to an end.

Oil markets have been heavily oversupplied this year due to increasing output of high quality, light oil from U.S. shale and lower-than-expected consumption as a result of faltering global economic growth and competition from alternative fuels.

Several members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) have suffered supply disruptions in recent months, but this has had little impact on prices.

In Libya, clashes between rival factions have closed oil ports and terminals this month, reducing exports from the OPEC producer, which used to sell over 1 million barrels per day of crude to world markets, to almost nothing.

OPEC, which pumps a third of the world’s oil, had been expected to trim output to try to stabilize prices, but it decided in November to keep production unchanged and let the market find its own level.

The news agency reported PVM Oil Associates analyst, Tamas Varga, as predicting no let-up in the sell-off, saying “the bears” were in firm control of the market.

“The trend is still down and supports are expected to be under pressure. It is not recommended to go against this trend”, he was quoted as saying.

Reuters’ technical analyst Wang Tao said Brent may fall to $54.98 while U.S. oil is expected to drop to $52.10.

Nigeria’s economy has come under pressure in recent times primarily because of the steep drop in oil prices. The commodity, which accounts for over 90 per cent of the nation’s export earnings and approximately 70 per cent of its fiscal revenue, fell by over 40 per cent in a six-month period in 2014 from $115 a barrel to below $70.

The development resulted in a decline in the external reserves, prompting immediate responses from both the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

As part of the government’s response to the oil price slump, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, initially announced that the economic team had approved a $5 per barrel reduction in the 2015 budget benchmark price for oil from $78 to $73 per barrel. However, as the price of oil continued to fall, she said that the figure had been further lowered to $65 a barrel.

She further revealed that the government had introduced a series of austerity measures aimed at cushioning the impact of the oil slump on the economy and to generate additional revenues to fund the 2015 budget.

She explained that the measures would be implemented from the beginning of the second quarter of 2015 and would significantly boost the ratio of non-oil revenues to oil revenues.

On its part, the CBN responded to the falling oil revenues by devaluing the naira by eight per cent-officially setting the exchange rate to N168 to one US Dollar. It also raised interest rates to a record 13 per cent in addition to introducing more tightening measures aimed at curbing capital outflows and stabilizing the naira, which in the last quarter of 2014 lost 9 per cent against the dollar.

Although the apex bank insists that the measures it has introduced will bolster the naira, the currency continued to trade for N180-N182 to the dollar three days after Christmas.

Analysts believe that unless oil prices head north, the naira will continue to struggle thus causing more hardship for Nigerians.

How my administration will be remembered – Jonathan

(NIGERIA) President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday thumbed up for his administration for its on-going accomplishments, and boasted that he would positively be remembered after his tenure.

He regretted that some Nigerians for now will not see the achievements of his administration until they experience another to enable them compare with the one before and after his administration.

President Jonathan maintained that he was prepared ahead of assumption of office to make positive difference in governance in order not to bring shame to his people of Bayelsa State and the South-South geopolitical zone in general.

He spoke while having audience with a delegation of traditional rulers and leaders from his home state, Bayelsa State, led by Governor Seriake Dickson at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The delegates include, among others, the Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, Alfred Diete-Spiff, Bayelsa State Chief Judge, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, former Managing Director of NDCC, Timi Alaibe, traditional rulers, and clerics.

President Jonathan assured that he would double his efforts in bringing transformation in every aspect of the country in order to guarantee an opportunity for another Bayelsa son becoming the president of the country in future.

According to the President, “The new year is full of challenges for Nigerians because of the early elections. Everywhere will be hot from January 2.

“I assure you that I am here by the grace of God with the willingness of Nigerians. If Nigerians say I shouldn’t be here, I wouldn’t have been here. We contested election in 2011 and Nigerians voted for us.

“I am your own, if I don’t do well, the shame will be on you. If I do well, you will have some kind of pride. I will do my best.

“I always say that I will not even expect praises now, because hardly do people praise serving leaders. It is when you leave, people will begin to know.

“When you leave, people will begin to compare what you have done over the period vis-a-vis what others have done, then, they will compare you with whoever takes over.

“Probably that is the time some people will begin to say good about you. But I will do my best to make sure that we change things (for the better).

“We are trying to create enabling environment for our economy to thrive irrespective of the challenges we are having in the petroleum sector and the security challenges we have.

“I will do my best so that by the time I will leave, you will be able to say that when our son was there, he served the country well so that one day, another son of Bayelsa may be given another opportunity to serve Nigerians.”

President Jonathan lamented that the social media, initially meant for good, has become an instrument for propagation of evil and abuse of individuals.

“These days, there are all kinds of stories. It is all over the world; leaders are being lambasted, especially through the social media.

“People use what knowledge had created for negative reasons. Just as I was told that the person who invented dynamite regretted that invention because he thought he was coming up with something to solve human problem, but when he got to know about the level of destruction: human lives that are being blown up because of explosion, the man regretted that invention.

“What is supposed to be used for the common good was turned to negative purposes.”

Governor Dickson, on his part, explained that they were at the Presidential Villa to felicitate with President Jonathan and his family in the spirit of the festive season just as they wished him a victorious New Year. The climax of the visit was the presentation of a giant season’s greeting card to the President on behalf of the state.

2015: Mayhem likely over Jonathan, Buhari’s intrigues – Lamido

(NIGERIA) Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State has warned that unless President Goodluck Jonathan and his main opponent in the February 14, 2015 presidential election, General Muhammadu Buhari, are ready to clearly distinguish between their interests and the corporate existence of Nigeria as an indivisible entity, the country would be heading for doom. He warned that mayhem is likely over the antics of both politicians.

While President Jonathan is the presidential flag bearer of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Buhari, a former head of state, is that of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lamido accused Buhari and Jonathan “as albatross of the nation due to their desperation to lead Nigeria at all cost,” adding that the main problem of Nigeria today politically is the duo of Jonathan and Buhari.

The Jigawa governor observed: “Today a vote for either of them could lead Nigeria to an untimely division as well as push others to their early graves.

Lamido was of the opinion that “so long as we want Nigeria to get out of the present predicament, we must be sincere in the way we practice democracy so as to avoid bloodbath and the rampant killing of Nigerians because of the interest of a few individuals.”

Speaking at the PDP mammoth rally for 2015 general elections, Lamido accused Buhari of divisive campaigns in the northern and southern parts of the country.

He noted that a critical look at the situation on ground exposes people like Buhari as being insincere in both intent and purpose.

Elaborating, Lamido alleged that when Buhari talks to the electorate in the North, he usually plays up the religious card, but once he is in the South, he plays it down by harping on the unity of Nigeria.

Lamido wondered why Buhari had gone out of his way to select a Christian as his running mate and what this portends, adding: “Why then are our people vilified and maligned because they refuse to vote for a Muslim as their president and have opted for a Christian?

“If not, why is it that he chose a Christian as his running mate and shunned the Muslim community, then he turns round to tell the people in the North that his contest is anchored on promoting and guiding their ideological faith.

He said Nigeria is at a crossroads and blamed the two personalities for the impending danger ahead of the nation.

He warned that after the declaration of the winner of the 2015 presidential election, there could be mayhem if the provocative statements of the supporters of both candidates are anything to go by.

“Today, a vote for either of them could lead Nigeria to an untimely division as well as push others to their early graves.

“We have heard the devilish pronouncements of people like Edwin Clark and Dokubo Asari and Buba Galadima, among others, who were predicting a bad end for the country should we Nigerians fail to vote for either Jonathan or General Buhari and going by what their supporters are preaching, if either of them fails to scale through, it could destabilise Nigeria.”

Lamido, however, hoped that Nigeria will survive the intrigues, adding that it was unfortunate that their supporters are preaching doom for the nation.

He urged the Jigawa electorate, especially members of the PDP to vote for the candidates of their choice and told them not to be intimidated or coerced into inappropriate decisions.

Other candidates at the rally were the three senatorial contenders who were handed the party’s flags to gun for their respective seats during the forthcoming elections.

Also speaking, the Vice-Chairman, North West of the PDP, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Kazaure, who represented the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, said the fact remains always that the PDP is still the party for the people of Nigeria.

He described the huge crowd of PDP supporters in the state as an indication of victory for the party in the state, adding that its governorship candidate was just waiting for the time to be sworn in.

Boko Haram kills 15 again in Borno village

(NIGERIA) Boko Haram militants have stormed Kautikari, in Borno State, near the Cameroon border, killing at least 15 people. Kautikari is just 10 kilometres from Chibok, where more than 200 schoolgirls were abducted on April 14, 2014, and remained captives till date.

This was just as the Defence Headquarters said it was probing allegation of the incursion of Cameroon’s military into the Nigerian airspace while pursuing the insurgents at the weekend.

Witnesses and a security sources said, however, that the insurgents had targeted Kautikari in the Monday night attack, and opened fire on the residents.

“They were about twenty, well-armed. They came in four-wheel drive vehicles and some motorcycles. Initially, I thought they were soldiers,” survivor Jonah Umaru was quoted in an agency report as saying.

“The man running behind me was gunned down as I was fleeing. Afterwards, there were 15 people lying dead in the streets,” he added.

Boko Haram gunmen were said to have kidnapped 172 women and children and killed 35 other people this month near the same area.

Underscoring the regional threat posed by the group, Cameroon’s Army said it had killed at least 41 Boko Haram militants as it fought off a wave of attacks along its border with Nigeria over the weekend.

Also, the Defence Headquarters has explained that the military has been conducting coordinated air and land operations against Boko Haram in some parts of the North-East, promising to investigate allegations that Cameroon bombers violated the nation’s airspace while pursuing insurgents.

In a terse statement on the Defence Headquarters Twitter page yesterday, Defence spokesman, Major General Chris Olukolade said, the “ongoing highly coordinated air operations conducted by the Nigerian Air Force are achieving desired results. There are no indications of any foreign force engaging in any part of Nigeria.”

In obvious reference to reports that Cameroon’s Armed Forces pursued about 1,000 suspected Boko Haram fighters, who attacked the north of the country into Nigerian territory on Sunday, Olukolade said: “We will investigate claims of airstrikes by a foreign force on our soil.”

IG doles out N7m to widows of policemen

(NIGERIA) The Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, on Tuesday doled out N7 million to 14 wives of the 35 police officers declared missing in Gwoza, Borno State, to alleviate their sufferings.

Each of the women got N500,000, at a ceremony in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.

The policemen were declared missing after members of the Boko Haram sect attacked the Police Mobile Force training school at Gwoza on August 20,2014.

One of the officers later resurfaced and resumed duty.

Apart from the cash, the IG also donated 20 tubers of yam, one bag of rice and one gallon of vegetable oil to each of the women and 84 other police wives whose husband had died in the line of duty.

Sixty-two widows of policemen killed by members of the Ombatse cult at Alakyo village in Nasarawa state on May 7, 2013, also benefited from the food items.

Department of State Services  lost 10 operatives in the incident.

Abba re-assured that the search for the  missing police officers would be intensified until they were either found alive or dead.

He said, “Those whose husbands are still missing, let me say that we are still pained, we are still hopeful and we have not stopped the efforts to trace them, wherever they are.

“We will not relent until we are able to account for each and every one of them, this I want to assure you. The search continues, the hope is still there.”

The police boss assured the women the force would not forget them whenever it mattered, particularly at a season like the yuletide which was a time to share with one another.

Abba also vowed that the outcome of investigation into the incident, as well as the panel constituted by the Nasarawa State  government on the killing of the officers by the cult, would be implemented appropriately.

He described the incident as one of the unfortunate incidents that had affected the police in recent years.

Seven Boko Haram bombers die in explosive-laden van

(NIGERIA) Seven suspected Boko Haram terrorists were on Monday killed when an Improvised Explosives Device hidden in a Toyota pick-up van exploded before it could get to Biu Market, suspected to be its destination.

A security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity with our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday, said, “A Toyota pick-up van, loaded with maize and beans with IED hidden under them, belonging to Boko Haram insurgents, exploded near Chikwarkir village of Biu, killing all the occupants of the van.”

He said it was believed that the insurgents intended to sneak into Biu Market to detonate the explosives and kill many traders and customers.

“As you know, it is harvest time and people are taking their farm produce to the market; but thank God, the bomb exploded before they could get to the market,” the source said.

He added that the insurgents must have specifically chosen Monday, as they were aware that Monday and Thursday were the market days in Biu, the headquarters of Biu Local Government.

N21bn donation legal, PDP tells critics

(NIGERIA) The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has defended the donation of N21.27bn to its presidential campaign by some individuals and governors in the party.

Some of the critics wondered why the party and President Goodluck Jonathan would also collect donations from governors who were unable to pay salaries to workers in their states.

The governors collectively donated N1.05bn.

Some lawyers, including Senior Advocates of Nigeria, have also called for the prosecution of the party and the donors.

But the party said that those criticising the party and President Goodluck Jonathan for the money were merely bellyaching.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, who spoke in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Monday, said the party did not flout any law in raising the funds.

Oladipo said those criticising the party were free to do so, adding that “comments are free” and that those speaking against the donation were ignorant of the law.

He said those complaining about the donation might also not be aware that some group of individuals came together to make donations.

He said Nigerians should know that a presidential campaign is money-spinning in Nigeria.

Oladipo said, “Comments are free. But Nigerians should know that elections and campaigns are money-spinning; they cost money.

“But let me add that as long as the fund-raising we did was and is still within the armpit of the law, then we have not breached any law.

“What we did was legitimate. We didn’t force anyone to donate at all.

“You may wish to know that some employees came together to donate. Those bellyaching are busybodies, but let them know that what we did is within the law and the Constitution is not against it.”

Oladipo assured Nigerians and members of the party, including the donors, that the money would be judiciously spent.

On the submission of the party’s candidates names to the Independent National Electoral Commission, Oladipo said the party was not having problems in this regards.

Already, he said the party had submitted the names of its 109 senatorial candidates to the commission.

He said, “We are on course concerning the submission of our candidates’ names to the INEC. Already, we have submitted the names of our 109 senatorial candidates to the commission.

“The names of our presidential candidate and that of his running mate is also there. We have also submitted the names of all our candidates for the House of Representatives. Then, the names of governors and their deputies are with the commission.”

He said the Presidential Campaign Committee of the party would soon be inaugurated to handle President Jonathan’s campaign.

[UPDATE] Forty bodies found in missing AirAsia plane search

At least 40 bodies have been recovered from the sea in the search for missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501, the Indonesian navy says.

The bodies were spotted along with debris floating in the Java Sea off the Indonesian part of Borneo, in one of the search zones for the plane.

There has been no official confirmation that the remains come from the plane.

The Airbus A320-200, carrying 162 people from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore, disappeared on Sunday. -CNN-

[UPDATE] AirAsia plane wreckage discovered, two bodies found

Debris from missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501 was found Tuesday, and two bodies were found nearby, authorities say.

“AirAsia Indonesia regrets to inform that The National Search and Rescue Agency Republic of Indonesia today confirmed that the debris found earlier today is indeed from QZ8501, the flight that had lost contact with air traffic control on the morning of 28th,” the airline said in a statement.

“We are sorry to be here today under these tragic circumstances,” said airline head Sunu Widyatmoko. “We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to the family and friends of those on board QZ8501. Our sympathies also go out to the families of our dear colleagues.”

Two bodies have been sighted, Indonesian navy official Manahan Simorangkir told CNN on Tuesday. The body of a woman was recovered, but large waves have prevented crews from getting to the second body, Simorangkir said.

The bodies were not immediately identified.

Hospitals in the Indonesian city of Surabaya are being prepared to help house and identify bodies being recovered off the coast of Borneo.

Bambang Sulistyo, head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency, said the discovery came when a crew on a military aircraft spotted the shadow of an object that looked like a plane in the water.

Further searching found floating objects believed to be the bodies of passengers, and then what appeared to be an emergency exit of the plane.

Officials sent other search teams racing to the area.

The debris was found in the Karimata Strait, about 110 nautical miles southwest from the Indonesian city Pangkalan Bun, AirAsia said.

The news dealt a heartbreaking blow to relatives of passengers who had been waiting anxiously for information at the airport in Surabaya, the Indonesian city where the flight began its journey Sunday with 162 people on board.

The plane was carrying 155 passengers and seven crew members. The overwhelming majority of those on board were Indonesians. There were also citizens of Britain, France, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea.

There were scenes of anguish as families watched a live news conference about the discovery of the debris and saw video of a helicopter lowering a diver to what appeared to be a floating body.

Some people fainted, and stretchers were taken into the room.

Family members burst into tears, dabbing their eyes as officials passed out tissues. Some sat with their eyes full of tears, hands covering their mouths, or heads buried in their hands. Others had phones jammed against their ears.

Obasanjo, Buhari planning interim govt —FG

(NIGERIA) The Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, on Monday, said a plot by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to form an interim government has been uncovered.

The minister said this in Lagos at the launch of a book titled, ‘Watch the Watcher,’ written by an activist, Yinka Odumakin, in reaction to Obasanjo’s controversial book, ‘My Watch’.

Adesiyan said he had already directed the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba; and the Department of State Service to arrest anybody that made inflammatory statements ahead of the 2015 elections.

He said, “Many of those in the APC are disgruntled PDP members who are no longer relevant and because they could not have their way, they have started to heat up the polity. They have said they will form a parallel government if they lose.

“I have already told the IG and the DSS to arrest anybody making such mutinous and inflammatory statements.”

Adesiyan said his suspicion was fuelled by a threat by the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, that the APC would form a parallel government if the 2015 general elections were rigged.

He added, “Obasanjo is already planning to install an interim government with Buhari. But we will vote and we will work with whoever wins the election.”

Adesiyan, who was detained in 2003 for the murder of the Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, said the former President was vindictive and was fighting Jonathan because he (Jonathan) had refused to be used by him.

The minister, who was later freed over Ige’s murder, said Obasanjo picked Jonathan as the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s running mate because he felt he could control him but his plans backfired.

The minister said, “He picked a President that was sick and while we were campaigning for the President, he (Yar’Adua) was always in Germany receiving treatment. While many were lobbying for the VP slot, Obasanjo picked a gentleman, Goodluck Jonathan, who had no strong political base so that he could control him.

“Unfortunately for Obasanjo, God had a better plan and Jonathan refused to be used. Obasanjo, being the man that he is, has now teamed up with Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar to snatch power but Tinubu will outsmart him because we Osun people are smart. Ask Tinubu, he is my brother, from my state. He is from Iragbiji while I am from Ode-Omu.”

The Director of Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisations, Dele Alake, said it was silly for anyone to say that Buhari was plotting the emergence of an interim government when Buhari was also participating in the presidential election.

He said, “It must have dawned on Nigerians that the PDP don’t have any answer to the multifarious problems plaguing Nigeria and that is why they have resorted to mudslinging and character assassination.

“If Buhari was planning an interim government, why would he be running for President in the first place? I think sanity has taken leave from them.

“Buhari remains the only viable solution to the quagmire that Nigeria has fallen into and it will take a disciplined person like Buhari to straighten things out.”

When contacted, a source close to Obasanjo, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was only the ex-president that could react to the allegation.

The source told our correspondent on the telephone, “It is only Baba that can react to the matter.”

Obasanjo’s book, a distortion of history – Osoba

(NIGERIA) The three-part autobiography of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, My Watch, has continued to evoke anger and criticisms as the book was described by a former Governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, as a distortion of history.

Osoba, who promised to write his own book to set the record straight, said Obasanjo lied blatantly when he said that the third term agenda was foisted on him in 2007.

The former governor spoke in Lagos on Monday at the public presentation of a book, titled, “Watching the Watcher: A book of remembrance of the Obasanjo years,” where he was the chairman of the occasion.

The book, which is a rejoinder to Obasanjo’s book, was authored by the Publicity Secretary of the Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin.

Osoba said though he had not read Obasanjo’s book, he was appalled by the aspect of the book where Obasanjo said he did not initiate the relationship between the disbanded Alliance for Democracy and the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said he recalled how Obasanjo approached the AD governors “virtually on his knees, begging us to come and rescue him and support his second term agenda.”

He said that contrary to Obasanjo’s claim that his vice, Atiku Abubakar, was at the forefront of the relationship with Afenifere, Obasanjo was always flying down at the shortest notice from Abuja to meet with the late leader of the Afenifere, Abraham Adesanya, who always chose the venue of their meetings.

Osoba said, “I haven’t read the book but I am of the profession of the watchdog. And when you have somebody watching the watcher, who thought he could be all-in-all in Nigeria… That was why I was interested in coming to honour Yinka. The watcher wrote something important in his book, which Wole Soyinka has given his own verdict about.

“I am going to give my own verdict in my own book. An aspect of it was the mention of 2003, where Gen. Obasanjo denied the relationship between the AD and the PDP. He said it was the idea of the Vice President, the Turaki of Adamawa, Atiku Abubakar. I think the story is far from the fact. Well, we are age mate. So, I can say that it is far from the truth.”

Also speaking at the occasion, a chieftain of the Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, described Obasanjo as a man who did not deserve to be listened to.

Adebanjo said he was shocked that Obasanjo could muster the courage to accuse others of corruption.

He said, “A man who says he is clean…, the Yorubas have a saying that if you want to know who you are, speak to the people around you. Your wife says you are bad, your son says you are of no use, your daughter says you are a miscreant, and you still say you have done well… You know the type of people they are.”

According to Adebanjo, Obasanjo’s biggest undoing was his not giving credit to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in his book.

“Here is a man. Those who had been fighting for the independence of this country, he has no good word for them. All his predecessors – the late Nnamdi Azikwe, the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Awolowo and all. And even the greatest opponent of Awolowo would declare that he was a man who made Nigeria great.

“You all remember (the late Chief Emeka) Ojukwu after the death of Chief Awolowo, even with all the controversies that they had, Ojukwu had to remark after Awolowo’s death that he was the greatest and the best President that Nigeria never had. Nobody has contradicted that statement. But to Obasanjo, Nigeria never existed before he came into office, Nigeria cannot exist until he is in office. He has only one adviser: Olusegun Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, that is his adviser,” Adebanjo said.

Adebanjo said he was surprised when he (Obasanjo) said somebody had unclean hands.

He said he recalled that Obasanjo doubled as the Minister of Petroleum Resources throughout his eight years in office as the President and allegedly perpetrated a lot of untoward actions.

He said, “I also don’t know whether the author remembered the interview that Danjuma gave some time ago that if you audit the account of the NNPC, you would not hesitate to send Obasanjo back to Yola prison. I didn’t say so, but Danjuma said so. And you know how credible that man is. He (Obasanjo) has not refuted the statement.”

Describing Obasanjo as a manipulator, Adebanjo said the former President ensured that the PDP constitution was altered so that he could become the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees after leaving office.

Adebanjo said Nigerians should be grateful to Odumakin for taking on the responsibility of setting the record straight for the sake of posterity.

The author, Odumakin, said he picked Osoba as the chairman of the book’s public presentation because he rescued him when Obasanjo ordered his detention at the State Criminal Investigations Department, Panti, in 2005.

The reviewer of the book, Prof. G.G. Dara, from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, described the book as “a provocative and polemical book of memoirs and reflections by Yinka Odumakin about Gen, Olusegun Obasanjo.”

He added that the author intended to challenge “the exaggerated claims of heroic grandeur and accomplishments made by the former President.”

Dara said, “He (Odumakin) hopes that the book will add to the collective memory card of Nigerians, so that they would not suffer the disease of amnesia, which encourages unworthy public men and women to act with impunity.”

Our appointment on Unity Schools’ students’ insurance followed due process – NICON

(NIGERIA) Contrary to recent reports in some newspapers on the appointment of NICON Insurance Limited as the sole underwriter of the Students Welfare Insurance Scheme of Unity Schools, the appointment actually followed due process at the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.

Senior Manager, Corporate Affairs of NICON Insurance Limited, Mr. Ade Adesokan, stated in Lagos that the new scheme, which is the intellectual property of NICON Insurance Limited, was presented to the Federal Ministry of Education and due process was followed before its appointment as the underwriter.

Adesokan, the company’s spokesperson also affirmed that the NICON Insurance Limited was democratised and privatised in 2006 and duly acquired by Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim, CFR as the Core Investor.

According to him, the appointment of the company as sole underwriter was based on the recommendations of the Committee put in place by the Tender Board of the ministry where other insurance companies were screened.

His words, “Despite the fact the scheme is an intellectual property of NICON Insurance Limited, other insurance companies also participated actively before the company was finally appointed as the underwriter”.

“The Committee also noted that it was only NICON Insurance Limited that has regional and branch offices in all the 36 states of the federation where the Unity Schools were presently located”.

“The Committee also affirmed that only NICON Insurance’s branch network that could access the Unity Schools all over the federation within an hour.”

“For the avoidance of doubt, the scheme was packaged under the normal Group Life and Personal Accident insurance cover”, Adesokan added.

According to him, “the statute that established NICON Insurance has not been repealed by any Act of Parliament; therefore the Company could insure the Assets and Liabilities of the Federal Government”.

“Other competitors in the insurance market should always think outside the box not relying on NICON Intellectual Property to reap where they did not sow”, he stated.

Concerned with students’ welfare and continuity of their studies nation-wide, NICON Insurance Limited in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Education recently, in Abuja, packaged the Students Welfare Insurance Scheme, he added.

The scheme is aimed at bringing succour to students that may lose their parents or sponsors either through accident or by natural means.

It was packaged for students of 104 Unity Schools throughout the country, he stressed.

“The Students Welfare Insurance Scheme for Unity Schools is a combination of Group Personal Accident and Group Life Assurance Schemes,” Adesokan added.

According to him, in the case of accidental, death of a student, the sponsor named in the policy would be entitled to N500, 000.

In the event of the death of the sponsor or guardian of a student, the pupil would be entitled to the payment of school fees up to the year of graduation from the secondary school up to a maximum of N500, 000 per annum.

In case a pupil accidentally sustains permanent disability, he will be entitled to N500, 000 as compensation. For accidental medical expenses, a pupil would be entitled to N50, 000 for medical treatment.
